Araki ryu Torite Kogusoku

佐倉藩荒木流 Sakura-han Araki-ryu

Sakura-han (佐倉藩) Araki-ryu Jujutsu

One unique line of Araki-ryu developed in the Matsumoto-han, in current day Nagano Prefecture.  This domain was granted to Hotta Masamori in 1635.   Masamori was  granted the larger Sakura domain in northern Chiba prefecture in 1642.  Both the Araki-ryu and the famous Tatsumi-ryu moved along with the Hotta.  This ryu became a yawara/jujutsu ryu which developed from the older torite-kogusoku, still retaining a lot of the names of kata from the mainline.

This line of Araki-ryu is long extinct.  In one manner, however, the techniques still exist.  Tatsumi-ryu, still extant, has 50 yawara techniques in their curriculum, and oral tradition within the ryu is that this section was incorporated from Araki-ryu.  Tatsumi-ryu uses a number of the names of the Araki-ryu kata.

Sakura-han Araki-ryu Lineage

1. Araki Muninsai Minamoto no Hidetsuna  (荒木夢仁斎 源秀縄)

2.  Mori Kasuminosuke Katsushige  (森霞之助 勝重)

3.  Miyamoto Heiuemon Akihisa  (宮本平右衛門秋久)    Miyamoto is listed in some lineages as a third generation ahead of Yamamoto Kasuke.  It is possible that he was a senior to Yamamoto, who had some role in teaching him.  Perhaps, later in Yamamoto's life, he wished to give full credit only to Mori Kasumi as a teacher, but this is pure speculation.

4.   Yamamoto Kasuke Katsuyuki (山本嘉助勝之)

5. Kumagaya Kakubei Haruhisa  (熊谷角兵春久)

6.  Sato Shigesaburo Michishiro (左藤重三郎道白)

7.  Oshigiri Doun Nagatoki (押切道雲長時)

14.   Hoshikawa Fusaemon Hidetaka (星川房右衛門英隆)

Mainline Araki-ryu descending from Kumagaya Kakubei Haruhisa

Several makimono exist of torite-kogusoku through the tenth generation.  Comparing the lineage charts, we see that Sakura-han Araki-ryu diverges from the 9th generation with Hoshikawa Fusaemon Hidetsugu (星川房右衛門英次), a student of Oshigiri Sazaemon Chosui (押切左衛門長吹).  Other students of Oshigiri continued to pass down the mainline tradition.  As all but one of the shihan of the Sakura-han Araki-ryu were from the Hoshikawa family, it is almost sure that one of them developed this line.

6.  Sato  Tozaburo Michishiro (左藤十三郎道白) - variant character (十) replaces (重) in other lineages.

7. Oshigiri Sazaemon Chosui (押切左衛門長吹) Note that  Oshigiri Doun Nagatoki (押切道雲長時) is omitted from this lineage.  It is possible that this makimono was written by a scribe, and names were omitted, or syllables misheard.

8.  Matsuda Tozaemon Banji (松田外左衛門次)

9.  Takahashi Shirobei Naga (高橋市良平長X)
