Sasayama Araki-ryu  篠山荒木流

Sasayama-han (篠山藩) was founded in 1609, granted to Matsudaira Yasushige.  The domain was ruled by several different clan until 1748, when it was granted to Aoyama Tadatomo. The Aoyama clan originated in Kozuke.

Sasayama was one domain carved out of the larger geographical area, Tanba no Kuni (丹波国).  Although Tanba was adjacent to Settsu, the territory of the Araki clan, there is  no  data that establishes the existence of Araki-ryu in Settsu, which was decimated by Nobunaga around the time of the creation of Araki-ryu.  An examination of the lineage suggests the possibility that this line of Araki-ryu was carried to Sasayama with the Aoyama clan in mid-Edo.  Through the sixth generation, Hōzaka Kuroemon Yoshihisa (方坂九郎左衛門 吉久), the shihan are identical to those in Kozuke Araki-ryu, the dividing point being the seventh generation.  It is quite probable that a matching of dates will reveal that either Tanaka Souemon Tadauji  (田中曽右衛門正氏) or Yoshikawa Yoshisaemon Katsushige   (市川吉左衛門勝貞) (seventh and eighth generation shihan, respectively), accompanied the Aoyama to Sasayama.
