Araki ryu Torite Kogusoku

荒木当流 Araki To-ryu

Araki To-ryu  荒木当流

Araki To-ryu was founded by Ueno Hachibei Nagakatsu.  After studying Araki-ryu, he later studied Takenouchi-ryu and Sekiguchi-ryu and fitted them together to form Araki To-ryu.  This ryu was located, among other places, in Aizu-han.  It was listed among the ryu approved by the Nishinkan, the Aizu government central organizing authority, as a "house dojo" (a dojo located in a private home), supervised by a magistrate to ensure that these small schools were conforming to Aizu government intentions.  Interestingly, the Nishinkan recorded it as an iai school.

Curriculum

•    The first section appears to be some sort of jujutsu numbering 21 kata – there appear to be notes indicating several variations to each form.
•    Kogusoku – five forms
•    Tachi-ai – 20 forms
•    Kogusoku (again) – four forms
•    (?) – 12 forms  (two layers – one apparently sitting and the other tachi-ai) – this appears to be some form of bladed practice – short or long sword – and some, but not all of the kata – top/bottom have the same names
•    Koshi mawari (above) – Koshi mawari (tachi ai) – again, some, but not all, have the same names
•    Yume no jo – (dream staff ) – 10 forms
•    Iai 24 forms/Torite 16 forms
